Watches & Wonders 2022 | New Parmigiani Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante
Parmigiani have premiered their new watch at the Watches & Wonders 2022 event in Geneva, and it’s fair to say it certainly embodies the spirit of the brand. Named the Parmigiani Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante, this new timepiece is a world-first and a beautiful blend of horological complication with simplicity and purism.
On the quest to rewrite watchmaking tradition, Parmigiani’s new timepiece focuses on intelligent design, proportions and details, whilst keeping in mind exclusivity and innovation. Part of a long line of world premieres that have made history for the brand since 2003, I think it’s about time we found out more about this fine timepiece.
A watch for globetrotters
In keeping with the design codes of the Tonda collection, this new timepiece is described as a watch for travellers, featuring an innovative yet simple-to-use GMT mechanism, connecting people across distances at the flick of a wrist.
If you’re not familiar with this type of feature, it basically means the watch displays two different time zones; usually your home time zone and then the place you’ve travelled to. You can see the difference between the two on this watch with its two superimposed hour hands - one in rhodium-plated gold and the other in rose gold.
The Calibre PF051 powers this impressive watch, with automatic winding and a power reserve of up to 48 hours. Let’s not forget the GMT function either, which takes detailing even further and homes a 22ct rose gold micro-rotor.
Luxurious materials
Freeing the dial from any additional time display is the flyback function, striping the watch back to the essentials and revealing the quality and care in every detail. What catches our eye is the guilloche pattern on the beautiful blue dial (Milano Blue to be precise!), which is complemented by no other than a platinum bezel – finished with polished and matt effects.
The indexes are all crafted in 18ct gold with rhodium plating, but the hands are by far the most elegant feature. Skeletonised and designed in a delta shape, the local time hour is crafted in 18ct gold with rhodium plating, whilst the home time hour is crafted in 18ct rose gold. Watch in awe whether you’re home or away as the minimalistic hands sweep the striking dial.
Inspired by architecture
The silhouette of the watch has been designed to boast a distinctive structure. Part of the brand’s architecture-inspired collection, the watch’s defining lines symbolise its elegance and simplicity, serving the role as a secret signature design code.
“The world-first Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante pushes the boundaries of watchmaking, reinventing one of the most coveted and useful functions and embodying Parmigiani Fleurier’s discreet, unostentatious spirit through uncompromising technical choices.” – Guido Terreni, CEO Parmigiani Fleurier.
We’re definitely impressed. And if you are too, you can shop more impressive Parmigiani watches online with Beaverbrooks.
