July's Birthstone | Ruby

July's Birthstone | Ruby

What is the birthstone for July?

July's birthstone is the gorgeous ruby. Symbolic of the passion and energy associated with the colour red, rubies are truly breathtaking and have been treasured throughout history for their vitality.

Did you know? Rubies were called the 'King of Gems' by ancient Hindus.

So, what is ruby? Rare, unique and valuable, the ruby birthstone is one of the most sought-after gemstones after diamonds. Unusually for a precious gemstone, the natural imperfections can actually increase the value and are used to confirm a ruby's authenticity.

The meaning, colour & symbolism of ruby

The name ruby comes from the Latin word ruber, which means red. Various shades of red make up the July birthstone colour, with the finest ruby radiating a pure, vibrant red to a slightly purplish red colour. This colour is formed due to the element chromium; when there’s more chromium present, the stronger the shade of red.

Where are rubies found then? Well, rubies tend to be mined in various places around South East Asia such as Thailand and in the Pailin & Samlout District of Cambodia. The Republic of North Macedonia is also the only country in Europe to have naturally occurring rubies.

The gemstone for all things positive, the healing properties of rubies are said to not only balance the heart and give you confidence, but bring joy, spontaneity, laughter and courage to your life. Owning a ruby is said to give you wonderful dreams and helps you to retain wealth and passion. We love the sound of that!

What is Cancer’s birthstone?

The Cancer birthstone is ruby, for those with the Zodiac sign of Cancer (22nd June - 22nd July). Symbolised by the Crab, Cancers have a hard exterior which protects an emotive, inner beauty - just like the ruby.

Cancers also connect with pearls, emeralds, sapphires and moonstones.
