The Most Magical Christmas Proposal Ideas

The Most Magical Christmas Proposal Ideas

Winter’s arrival sparks many of us to start thinking about how we’re going to spoil our loved ones at the most wonderful time of the year. Christmas is also one of the best opportunities to propose. We’ve been honoured to be a part of your unforgettable moments for over 100 years and there’s nothing we love more than a good proposal.

Whether you’ve already chosen a gorgeous engagement ring, or you’re planning to find ‘the one’ very soon, knowing how to propose at Christmas can be a difficult task. With the build up to December 25th already a little chaotic (even more so with a surprise proposal on the cards!), we’re here to inspire you with our Christmas proposal ideas.

With so many possibilities for sweeping your loved one off their feet, our winter proposal ideas will help you set the tone for a magical day that will be remembered for years to come. That look on their face? That’s when you know all the secret planning was worth it.

The best ways to propose this Christmas

1. Winter walk

If walking is something you and your partner enjoy doing together, choose your favourite destination and brave the cold for a beautiful winter walk.

@daniellehall9

Take a flask of tea (or mulled wine if you fancy being extra festive!) to warm up before finding the perfect romantic spot to get down on one knee. You could even set up your camera on timer to take a picture of you both amongst the stunning scenery, and just before it flashes, capture you asking them the most important question.

2. Light it up

Decorate your home and garden with twinkling lights, a door wreath and illuminated decorations for the perfect start to the festive season. Whisper those four amazing words into your loved one’s ear as you switch on the lights to create the most romantic Christmas proposal.

The time when the Christmas celebrations really get going, decorating your house and switching all the lights on marks the perfect time to start a festive season filled with celebrations.

We’d recommend the Starlit Platinum Diamond Pear Shaped Solitaire Ring for stunning sparkle from the constellation of diamonds – perfect for a twinkly-lit proposal.

Proposal tip: If you’re unsure how to find the right ring size without spoiling the surprise, then follow our helpful tips in our Ring Size Guide.

3. A day of all things festive

Planning a day of pure Christmas indulgence is a great way to get you both in the festive spirit.

Start the day right with breakfast in bed and your favourite Christmas movie, before a spot of shopping, present wrapping and mince pies. End the day with some mulled wine and mince pies, then all that’s left to do is to round off the perfect winter’s day by getting down on one knee.

4. Little helpers

Involving family in your Christmas proposal can make it even more special. If you have children, ask them to present your other half with a ring box. You could even get your favourite four-legged friend in on the act! Just make sure you’re ready to ask the question as soon as your partner realises what’s going on.

5. Snow day

Scoring high on the list of romantic ways to propose, a blanket of freshly fallen snow is the perfect setting for a Christmas proposal.

Whilst snowy proposals are nearly impossible to plan - even with a chilly forecast – you can make sure you have your ring ready to go at the first hint of snowfall.

We love the Beyond Brilliance 18ct White Gold Diamond Solitaire Ring for its pristine glow, unmatched radiance and bright white brilliance – the perfect choice for a snowy backdrop!

6. Decorate the tree

One of the most beloved Christmas traditions, decorating the tree marks the moment when the magic of Christmas truly begins. This Christmas, set the tone with your favourite Christmas music and a toasty fire crackling in the background.

Surprise them with a personalised bauble inscribed with the magic question or reveal the ring as a glittering finishing touch. They’ll always remember the sparkle - and that it all started with you.

7. Christmas countdown

Advent calendars are a treasured part of the countdown to Christmas, with a little chocolate to brighten every day. To pull off this super cute Christmas engagement idea, go the extra mile and make your very own advent calendar and replace the chocolate behind the very last door with a beautiful diamond ring.

Make each day of December special with photos, special treats and heartfelt notes, so they know just how much you care by the 25th. Behind every gasp, every smile, there's you - the one who did all the planning and got it just right.

8. Special presents

If you’re wondering how best to propose on Christmas morning, why not tell the story of how you fell in love with a specially curated collection of presents?

Begin with the fragrance they wore on your first date, a recording of your song and a framed picture of your first holiday together. Finally, present them with a beautiful diamond ring and a request to spend the rest of your lives together.

9. A cracking proposal

You could take the idea of popping the question quite literally this Christmas, by enlisting the help of the nation’s favourite Christmas table accessory; the humble Christmas cracker.

Perfect if your loved one likes surprises, all you need to do is insert the ring inside the cracker and hope that she wins. Just remember to remove the mini-screwdriver and replace the joke with something much more romantic - ‘Merry me? Ho, ho, ho!’

10. Wait until Boxing Day

If you think your loved one may be expecting you to pop the question on Christmas Day, why not keep them on their toes and carry the celebrations on with a Boxing Day proposal.

Wrap the ring up in a beautifully wrapped box and tell them there’s one special present you saved to give them. Once they open it to find the ring box, ask them to marry you.

11. The best stocking filler ever

Instead of a satsuma, place the ring box in the toe of their Christmas stocking. When they discover it, be ready to get down on one knee and get ready to turn a magical moment into a memory that will be treasured for a lifetime.

12. Plan an unforgettable trip

Plan a special winter trip to Lapland to see Santa and the breathtaking Northern lights. See if you can get Santa in on the proposal. Ask him to tell your loved one that their Christmas gift has arrived early. At that moment, get down on one knee and propose amongst the perfect Christmas setting.

If you have a more intimate proposal in mind, just wait for the mesmerising Northern Lights to sparkle and propose in the snow, just the two of you, under a stunning sky. Because magic doesn’t just happen - it begins with the thought and care you put into making it real.

13. Christmas carollers

Arrange for Christmas carollers to call at your house and sing a Christmas song, followed by your song. You could even ask friends and family to take part – if you tell them it’s for a proposal then they have to do it! When your partner turns to look at you in surprise, reveal the ring.

14. Christmas market magic

What could be more festive and romantic than a proposal at the Christmas markets? Begin with hot chocolates and a turn around the ice rink, before moving onto mulled wine in time for the big question amongst the lights.

15. Plan a Christmas party

Plan a Christmas party to celebrate the arrival of the festive season. Invite all your nearest and dearest, transform the house into Santa’s grotto, and plan lots of festive games. Midway through the party, propose a toast to your loved one, before getting down on one knee to propose to them yourself. Let them know all the things you love most about them, so that they definitely feel merry and bright when they see the gift that makes all the surprise planning so worth it. They’ll love having their favourite people around them, ready to celebrate with the two of you.

The colourful, festive hue of the 18ct White Gold Diamond Tanzanite Pear Shaped Halo Ring makes for a truly glamorous winter proposal.

16. A hot chocolate with a twist

Buy a special mug with the words ‘marry me’ written at the bottom of the mug. Cosy up watching a Christmas film and wait for them to finish their hot chocolate and watch their eyes light up instantly.

17. Cosy up in front of the fire

Sometimes the simple ideas are the best. Create an intimate setting with a picnic blanket in front of the fire, plenty of snacks and a bottle of fizz. Whisper those unforgettable words “will you marry me” and cheers to a lifetime of happiness together.

We love the glowing, golden hues of the Beyond Brilliance 18ct Yellow Gold Oval Shaped Diamond Three Stone Ring - the perfect complement to the cosy setting.

18. Chocolate tin proposal

Buy their favourite Christmas chocolate tin, nestling the ring amongst the caramels and fruit creams. Make them a hot tea and wait for them to pull out their ring before you ask that all-important question.

19. Write it in the snow

An obviously weather-dependant idea (but very worth it if it works out), wait for a snowy day and sneak out into the garden and write ‘will you marry me?’ in the snow in big capital letters. Just be ready to go for one of the above ideas if you don’t get your snow day!

20. Winter sun proposal

If you really want to throw them off the scent and they’re more of a sunshine kind of person anyway, plan a sunny holiday together somewhere like Mexico or Barbados and propose on the beach on Christmas Day with your Santa hats on. Just think of how incredible the engagement selfies will look!

Christmas proposals FAQs

Is it a good idea to propose on Christmas Day?
Yes, of course! It’s one of the happiest days of the year, so take it to the next level with a Christmas day proposal to make it a day you’ll never forget.

What is the cutest way to propose?
Our favourite has to be the Christmas tree decorating proposal. With Bublé on in the background, a warming mulled wine in hand and the twinkle of fairy lights, nothing could be more romantic.

How much should you spend on an engagement ring?
It’s completely up to you. The old tradition s that you should spend three months’ salary on an engagement ring, but that is absolutely not essential. There are beautiful engagement rings for all budgets - from white gold rings to platinum engagement rings, it’s completely up to what you and your partner will love.

Which finger wears an engagement ring?
Traditionally in the UK, an engagement ring is worn on the fourth finger of your left hand. This dates back to Roman times, when it was believed that a vein runs directly from the ring finger straight to the heart. Many other countries, including Greece, Ukraine and Spain, wear their engagement ring on their right hand.
