We’ll help you shine, too! Our Getting Engaged Guide has lots more hints and tips along with real life advice from the men who have done it.
1. Treasure hunt
For this to work you have to do some secret preparation. Lead them towards you through different spots in the house that mean something to your relationship, they’ll be thrilled when they find you down on one knee!
2. A night under the stars
If you’re both adventurous and love the outdoors, why not have a romantic night in the garden under the stars? You can roast some marshmallows by a fire with hot chocolates and play some music and whilst you’re stargazing you can ask them the all-important question.
3. Virtual proposal
Having your family and friends share your special moment with you can still happen. Get inspired by PJ Bruno and his now-fiancé Jaz in our #ShareTheLove campaign and plan a secret video call with the people who mean the most to you both so you can propose with them all watching.
4. Romantic evening meal
Bring the restaurant proposal to your dining room with a lovely romantic evening meal. Plan their favourite three course menu with a bottle of prosecco, candles and music and pop the question after dessert. To be even more romantic, write the message on the plate in melted chocolate or icing sugar!
5. Recreate their dream destination
If you were planning a beach or city break proposal, why not recreate it at home? Make the garden a beach with sun loungers and cocktails or turn the kitchen into their favourite tourist location with pictures of their favourite city and famous delicacies. You could always take a trip to that location in the future and recreate your proposal.
6. Order your favourite takeaway
Follow in Christoff’s footsteps from our #ShareTheLove campaign and order pizza with a hidden message inside for them to open. When Charlotte opened her pizza, she was shocked to see the proposal and instantly said yes!
7. Games night
Make proposing fun and play trivia with your partner. After a few questions in when they least expect it ask the all-important question, or for something a bit more chilled and relaxing, customise a jigsaw puzzle so when it’s complete it spells out ‘Will you marry me?’.
8. Breakfast in bed
Surprise your loved one to breakfast in bed and put the engagement ring in the centre of the tray. Proposing in the morning means you can spend the whole day celebrating so think about how you’d like to spend the rest of your day – you could video call your loved ones, throw an engagement party at home, or curl up on the couch and watch your favourite movies together.
9. Decorate your home
In order to decorate your room, you have to make sure your partner isn’t going to be around. Either wait until they’re asleep, in another room or have gone to the shops and set up balloons, candles and rose petals, and put some music on to make it extra romantic. Izuanna, from our #ShareTheLove campaign, created a love heart shape of candles for his girlfriend Esther and proposed in the middle.
10. Include your children or pets
If you have children or pets, make the proposal even more special and include them into your plan. Create a proposal t-shirt and let them help present the ring, or if it’s your pet you could place the engagement ring on the collar or create a personalised dog tag that reads ‘Will you marry me?’.
