The best ways to propose this Christmas
1. Winter walk
If walking is something you and your partner enjoy doing together, choose your favourite destination and brave the cold fresh air for a beautiful winter walk.
Take a flask of tea (or mulled wine if you fancy being extra festive!) to warm up before finding the perfect romantic spot to get down on one knee. You could even set up your camera on timer to take a picture of you both amongst the stunning scenery, and just before it flashes, capture you asking her the most important question.
2. Light it up
The time when the Christmas celebrations really get going, decorating your house and switching all the lights on marks the perfect time to start a festive season filled with celebrations.
Take advantage of the cold weather to snuggle close, before whispering those four amazing words into your loved one’s ear as the tree lights up and you create the most romantic Christmas proposal.
Proposal tip: If you’re unsure how to find the right ring size without spoiling the suprise, then follow our helpful tips in our Ring Size Guide.
3. A day of all things festive
Planning a day of pure Christmas indulgence is a great way to get you both in the festive spirit.
Start the day right with breakfast in bed and your favourite Christmas movie, before doing a bit of shopping and some present wrapping. End the day with some mulled wine and mince pies, then all that’s left to do is to round off the perfect winter’s day by getting down on one knee.
4. Little helpers
A time for sharing the magic with family, getting others involved with your Christmas proposal can make it even more special. If you have kids, why not give them the most important job of presenting your other half with a ring box, or get your favourite four-legged friend in on the act. All you’ll need to do is to be ready to ask the question as soon as they realise what’s going on.
5. Snow day
Scoring high on the list of romantic ways to propose, a blanket of freshly fallen snow is the perfect setting for getting down on one knee if you have your heart set on a Christmas proposal.
Impossible to plan unless you’re confident of a chilly forecast, make sure that you have your ring ready to go and be prepared to put your proposal plan into action at the merest whiff of a snowflake.

6. Decorate the tree
One of the top Christmas traditions, decorating the tree is when the magic of Christmas is truly invited into your home. This Christmas, set the tone for decorating the best tree ever with some Christmas music, mulled wine and a toasty fire.
Surprise them with a personalised bauble that has the magic question written on it, or suggest that you’ve got the perfect finishing touch to add just the right amount of sparkle and show them the beautiful ring.
7. Christmas countdown
Advent calendars are a treasured part of many people’s countdown to Christmas; let’s face it, who doesn’t love having a bit of chocolate every day? To make this super cute Christmas engagement idea work, you can either replace the chocolate behind the last door with a beautiful diamond ring, or go the extra mile and make your very own advent calendar.
Make each day count with a poignant treat or a special note, and make sure you’re waiting to hear their answer when they open the door on the 25th.
8. Special presents
Proposing under the tree on Christmas morning can be so romantic but, if you’re wondering how you’ll get around to asking the question amongst the flurry of wrapping paper, why not give her a series of presents that tell the story of how you fell in love.
Start with the perfume she wore on your first date, a copy of your song, a picture of your first holiday together and, finally, a beautiful diamond ring and a request to spend the rest of your lives together.
9. Pop the question
You could take the idea of popping the question quite literally this Christmas, by enlisting the help of the nation’s favourite Christmas table accessory; the humble Christmas cracker.
Perfect if your loved one likes surprises, all you need to do is insert the ring inside the cracker and hope that she wins. Just remember to remove the mini-screwdriver and replace the joke with something much more romantic - ‘Merry me? Ho, ho, ho!’

10. Wait until Boxing Day
If you think your loved one may be expecting you to pop the question on Christmas Day, why not keep them on their toes and carry the celebrations on with a Boxing Day proposal.
Wrap the ring up in a beautifully wrapped box and tell them there’s one special present you saved to give them. Once they open it to find the ring box, ask them to marry you.
11. The best stocking filler ever
On Christmas morning after you’ve opened all the presents around the tree, sneakily place the ring and the ring box inside their stocking. Gather around the fireplace as you ask your loved one to see what’s inside their stocking and get down on one knee as they pull out the ring box.
12. Plan an unforgettable trip
Plan a special winter trip to Lapland to see Santa and the breathtaking Northern lights. See if you can get Santa in on the proposal. Ask him to tell your loved one that their Christmas gift has arrived early. At that moment, get down on one knee and propose amongst the perfect Christmas setting.
If you have a more intimate proposal in mind, just wait for the mesmerising Northern lights and propose in the snow as you admire the beautiful surroundings, just the two of you together.
13. Christmas carollers
Ask some Christmas carollers to call at your house and sing a Christmas song, followed by singing your song that means a lot to the both of you, as you propose at the front door.
You could even ask some friends to help out if you can’t find any carollers. If you tell them it’s for a proposal then they have to do it!
14. Christmas market magic
What could be more festive and romantic than a day at the Christmas markets, sampling the best hot chocolate and mulled wine on offer and a romantic proposal at the end of it? If there’s an ice rink nearby, you could propose on the ice for extra romance. Just make sure you can get up again without falling over!
15. Plan a Christmas party
Plan a Christmas party and pretend it’s purely to celebrate the arrival of the festive season. Invite all your nearest and dearest, decorate the house in full Santa’s grotto style and plan lots of festive games. Midway through the party, ask everyone to raise a glass to your loved and say all the reasons why you love them and get down on one knee with your ring in hand.
They’ll absolutely love having all their favourite people around them at the proposal, ready to celebrate with the two of you.
16. A hot chocolate with a twist
Buy a special mug with the words ‘marry me’ written at the bottom of the mug. Cosy up watching a Christmas film and wait for them to finish their hot chocolate and watch their eyes light up instantly.

17. Cosy up in front of the fire
Sometimes the simple ideas are the best. Create an intimate setting with a picnic blanket in front of the fire, plenty of snacks and a bottle of fizz. Whisper those unforgettable words “will you marry me” and cheers to a lifetime of happiness together.
18. Chocolate tin proposal
Who doesn’t love a chocolate box at Christmas? Get their favourite box of chocolates and plant the ring inside before they open it up. Act completely nonchalant snuggled up on the sofa and wait for them to pull out their ring before you ask that all important question.
19. Write it in the snow
An obviously weather-dependant idea (but very worth it if it works out), wait for a snowy day and sneak out into the garden and write ‘will you marry me?’ in the snow in big capital letters. Just be ready to go for one of the above ideas if you don’t get your snow day!
20. Winter sun proposal
If you really want to throw them off the scent and they’re more of a sunshine kind of person anyway, plan a sunny holiday together somewhere like Mexico or Barbados and propose on the beach on Christmas Day with your Santa hats on. Just think of how incredible the engagement selfies will look!
Christmas proposals FAQs
Is it a good idea to propose on Christmas Day?
Yes, of course! With twinkly lights all around and a time to be with loved ones, how could it not be? It’s one of the happiest days of the year, so your partner will already be excited and looking forward to the day. Why not take it to the next level and make it a day you’ll never forget.
What is the cutest way to propose?
Our favourite has to be the idea of proposing whilst decorating the Christmas tree. With Bublé on in the background to really set a romantic mood, get the mulled wine on and ask your loved one to turn the lights off for the moment you turn on the Christmas tree. Be ready down on one knee as they turn around and face the twinkly lights.
How much should you spend on an engagement ring?
It’s completely up to you. The old myth says you should spend three months salary on an engagement ring, but that absolutely does not have to be the case. There are beautiful engagement rings for all budgets. From 9ct white gold rings to platinum engagement rings, it’s completely up to you and whatever style you think your partner will love.
Which finger wears an engagement ring?
Traditionally in the UK an engagement ring is worn on your fourth finger on your left hand. This is believed to have started back in Roman times, as it was believed a vein runs directly from the ring finger straight to the heart. Many countries including Greece, Ukraine and Spain wear their engagement ring on their right hand.
