One To Watch | OMEGA Speedmaster Chronoscope
For fans of OMEGA’s legendary Speedmaster collection, you’ll be pleased to know there’s a new addition on the block – say hello to the OMEGA Speedmaster Chronoscope.
With seven watches all boasting a 43mm case size, the name Chronoscope blends two traditional Greek expressions; “Chronos” meaning time, and “Scope” meaning to observe. And it’s clear to see that this watch not only performs both these functions beautifully, but on multiple levels too.
Measuring the duration between two points or events, the Chronoscope has been defined as a watch used to accurately determine the duration of a phenomenon. So, with that being said, let’s find out why…
A trio of timing scales
This watch is packed with quirky details. For example, you can use your watch to see how far you are from a lightning storm, thanks to the impressive timing scales on the dial, plus more.
Printed on the dial you’ll find the tachymeter, telemeter and pulsometer, all of which offer their own special functions dependant on your needs. But even if you don’t need these features, they certainly make for a really cool talking point.
Here’s how each one works:
- The tachymeter measures the average travel time between two specific points based on how far you have travelled. It’s even better that it doesn’t matter whether your journey is in miles or kilometres.
- With a simple two-step process, the telemeter measures distance based on speed of sound to tell you how far you are from something visible and audible, such as a storm.
- Last, but certainly not least, the pulsometer measures your heartbeat thanks to its 30-pulse-per-minute scale.
Put the three together and you’re set for every adventure that comes your way.
Turning back time
So, it’s only right that a watch with so many interesting features should have an interesting design, right?
Showcasing the detailed “snail” design and leaf-shaped hands from the 40s models, the Chronoscope boasts a true heritage-inspired feel, with special touches such as a spiral track pattern that elegantly runs beneath the Arabic numerals on the dial. OMEGA have also included on one of this year’s watch trends with their famous “Panda” dial, which sees the sub dials contrast against the background.
Moving on to the straps, the different options will leave you spoilt for choice. Opt for the sportier models with perforated straps or go for more of a dress watch style with vintage brown leather. If you prefer an overall metallic look, the polished-brushed steel bracelets feature the brand’s patented comfort release system, making it adjustable to two positions.
One-of-a-kind
We have to talk about one watch in particular. Crafted in OMEGA’s exclusive Bronze Gold for the most beautiful, vintage finish, this one-of-a-kind alloy not only radiates a beautiful soft pink hue but also offers incomparable corrosion resistance for a watch that’s truly timeless.
The oxidized bronze dial boasts a special patina finish with opaline silver sub dials, whilst the “vintage” enamel tachymeter is a design first for OMEGA. Enriched with noble elements such as 37.5% gold, palladium and silver, this Bronze Gold is not only unique to the watch industry, but the luxurious look it gives the watch makes it very special.
Powering the Chronoscope
At the very heart of the OMEGA Speedmaster Chronoscope is the Master Chronometer Calibre 9908 manual-winding movement. Not only is it visible through the sapphire crystal case back, but the design of the Chronoscope bridge is another first for OMEGA – showcasing Geneva waves in arabesque that start from the balance wheel instead of the centre of the movement.
With a power reserve of up to 60 hours, this watch is clearly the ultimate tribute to OMEGA’s history of chronograph design and watchmaking skills. Available online and in-store from £7,450 or £155.20 per month, treat yourself to a watch designed to last a lifetime.
