We know that diamonds aren’t just for special occasions. Whether it's your engagement ring, a cherished gift, or a daily dose of sparkle, many people wear a diamond ring or jewellery every day. That means exposure to everyday residues (everything from hand cream and soap to cooking oils and dust) can dull even the most brilliant stones, especially in intricate settings where it’s easy to pick up dirt. That’s why knowing how to clean a diamond ring (or any diamond jewellery piece) is so important.

Our experts will professionally clean your diamonds in-store for the best results. But if you’re wondering how to clean a diamond ring or jewellery piece, we’ll show you how to do it at home. Whether it’s a white gold diamond ring, a pair of sparkling studs, or a breathtaking eternity band, your jewellery deserves the best care, so follow our top cleaning tips for keeping your diamonds as sparkly as they deserve to be.

Our method for how to clean a diamond ring and jewellery at home:

Not only does it keep your ring looking its radiant best, but regular cleaning of your diamond ring and diamond jewellery helps maintain the integrity of the setting too. Whether you're wondering how to clean diamond jewellery or simply the best way to clean a diamond ring, it all starts with a gentle, consistent routine with our at home cleaning tips.

First and foremost, we’d recommend using a professional jewellery cleaner when cleaning your diamond ring or jewellery. If you can’t get to one of our stores and need a quick cleaning fix, this Connoisseurs Jewellery Foam is a great choice. Simply soak your pieces in the cleaning foam, brush softly, rinse and dry.

For a touch-up, our Connoisseurs Diamond Dazzle Stik will quickly clean your diamonds, and remove any visible dust or dirt whilst its expert formula will make your diamonds shine. With its compact size, it’s easily portable and perfect to keep in a handbag, meaning it’s a super easy way to maintain on-the-go sparkle.

If you can’t get to one of our stores and need a quick cleaning fix, the secret to cleaning your diamonds at home lies in three simple household items: warm water, a mild soapy solution (such as hand soap), and a very soft toothbrush. It’s really that simple!

Follow these easy steps for diamond ring and jewellery cleaning that’s gentle but effective:

1. Fill a bowl with warm (not hot) water and a drop of soapy solution.

This will form a mild, non-abrasive cleaning solution, perfect for cleaning your diamond ring or jewellery.

2. Soak your diamond ring or jewellery piece for around 20–30 minutes.

This loosens any oils, lotions or hand cream that may have dulled your sparkle. It will also ensure your diamond comes out sparkling, even in those hard-to-reach settings.

3. Gently brush the stone and setting with a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Pay extra attention to the settings of the diamond – that’s where most of the dust and dirt collects. The soft bristles are essential for not harming or scratching the metal of your ring or jewellery.

4. Rinse under clean warm water and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.

This will dry your diamond ring or jewellery while making sure no residue or dust will come from the lint-free cloth. Et voila! Your diamonds are oh-so brilliant once again.

This gentle method is perfect not just for rings, but also perfect if you’re wondering how to clean diamond earrings, necklaces, bracelets and other precious pieces too.

Don’t forget to...

  • Avoid using harsh chemicals like bleach or acetone – they can damage both metal and stone.

  • Never clean your diamond jewellery over an open sink (trust us – it’s not worth the risk!).

  • For a deeper clean, consider investing in a jewellery cleaning kit, but make sure it’s right for the precious metal of your diamond pieces.

What about the metals?

Wondering how to clean a white gold diamond ring or jewellery piece? The method above works beautifully, but do make sure to avoid abrasive cleaners, which can wear down the rhodium plating over time. If your ring starts to look slightly yellow or less reflective, it might be time for a professional re-plating, which we offer in-store.

When it comes to a yellow gold diamond ring or jewellery, the metal doesn’t require plating, nor does it tarnish or fade. Platinum diamond rings are crafted in the most durable precious metal, meaning they’re more resilient and less susceptible to wearing. So when you’re choosing a jewellery cleaner, make sure to check it it’s right for the metal of your piece.

How to store your diamonds

Just like cleaning, how you store your diamond ring can make a big difference to its longevity and sparkle. Diamonds may be tough, but they can scratch other jewellery (and even each other) if tangled together, or sitting alongside other jewellery pieces.

To keep your pieces pristine, store them separately in the Beaverbrooks box they came in, a soft-lined jewellery box, or a soft pouch. A little organisation goes a long way in preserving the brilliance of your diamonds between wears. Regularly wiping your diamonds with a lint-free cloth can also go a long way to combatting dust and dirt, too.

Need more tips or want a professional polish? Pop into your local store, because after all, the best way to clean a diamond ring is to leave it to the experts.
