What is the birthstone for Aries?

Diamond is the Aries birthstone, for those with the Zodiac sign of Aries - 21st March - 19th April. The first sign of the Zodiac, Aries is symbolised by the Ram, ruled by the fire element and is the most action-orientated zodiac sign; full of fire, energy and brilliance - just like a diamond. Other gemstones that are recognised for the star sign Aries include amethyst and aquamarine.

Historically, sapphires and opals used to be classed as other birthstones for April, however today sapphires are recognised as birthstones for August, September and Virgo star signs. Opals are now recognised as birthstones for September and October and for Libra star signs. Learn more about sapphires and discover the meaning of opals.

The history of diamonds

Amongst the world’s most sought after treasures, you might be wondering where are diamonds found? Formed deep under the Earth’s crust billions of years ago, we’ve adored and adorned diamonds for centuries, believing they’re the ultimate gift and symbol of eternal love. Most commonly found in Africa, diamond mining has become more popular in places such as Russia and Canada, too.

Diamonds can come in many different colours such as yellow, blue and pink, however the most popular April birthstone colour is in fact colourless. The Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) grades diamond colour on a scale of D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown), with a chemically pure and structurally perfect diamond having no colour, making it rarer and more valuable. You can learn more about the colour of a diamond, along with the rest of the 4 Cs that make the perfect diamond in our Diamond Buying Guide: Understanding The 4 Cs Of Diamonds.

“Each of our diamonds are carefully selected to be in line with every one of the 4 Cs, but our 5th C of confidence is what sets a Beaverbrooks diamond apart from the rest. Crafted with the care and love that your diamonds deserve, we’re confident you can treasure our diamond rings and jewellery for eternity.” - Lorna, Head of Diamonds & Jewellery.

Here are five of our favourite diamond facts:

  • Diamonds are invincible! The hardest substance in the world, nothing can scratch a diamond apart from another diamond. Each of our diamonds is carefully crafted by experts, so it’s not just the durability of a Beaverbrooks diamond that you can treasure. It’s the look, fit, and feel too.

  • Every diamond is as unique as a snowflake and we hand-select each one, paying attention to every detail, to make sure it’s just right. We reject more diamonds than we choose, so you can be confident that your Beaverbrooks diamond is crafted to perfection, and sparkling with quality.

  • Diamonds are grown in the earth, around 100 miles below the surface, and can be up to 3 billion years old. This means that your natural Beaverbrooks diamonds are rare, eternal, and formed over billions of years.

  • The sparkle of a diamond is all about the cut! It’s no secret we know a thing or two about finding the perfect diamond, and we’re proud to say our diamond buying expertise and quality control spans over 50 years. Which is why we ensure each diamond is meticulously cut to the perfect ratio, so the light reflects beautifully, and it has a breathtaking sparkle from every angle.

  • The largest diamond ever discovered is the Cullinan diamond, weighing an incredible 3,106 carats! It was cut and polished by Royal Asscher founder Joseph Asscher into nine diamonds for the crown jewels, and 96 smaller diamonds.

What do diamonds symbolise?

So, what is the diamond meaning? A symbol of love, faithfulness, purity and innocence, diamonds are known as the love-bearing crystal, making them the perfect gemstone for engagement rings, wedding rings, and eternity rings.

The ultimate eternal gemstone, diamonds are believed to help open the mind to the new and possible and inspire imagination in its wearer. Other diamond healing properties include strength, fortitude and courage through the hardness of the gemstone, giving the power to drive away bad energy or fortune.
